Bench marks in 1897 and 2022
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE JUBILEE BENCHES DONTATED IN 1897?
Having just celebrated Her late Majesty’s unique Platinum Jubilee, we were looking back to how Wincanton celebrated Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897. From the programme, images of which you will find elsewhere on this website, we know 12 benches were placed around the town for public use.
Some survive. We know of those at the top of Bayford Hill, under the pollarded limes, looking out over the countryside; also of one at the top of Ireson Lane, although refurbishment in recent times has lost the date plaque. Where were, and maybe still are, the others?
Does anyone recall one at the bottom of the hill of the road to the racecourse, opposite Whitehall Garage? Were there any in Cale Park? Would any older members of your family or their friends or neighbours remember? Please ask, before this information disappears from collective memory, and let us know via e-mail, facebook, instagram
